Carina Nebula Brooch
A one-of-a-kind enamel pin, inspired by the bright and dark nebulosity of the Carina Nebula, which can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere. My enamel painting was based on an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Handmade from enamel on copper in a sterling silver setting with a standard pin finding.
The two enamel disks in the brooch are made from enamel on copper. The bottom disk was made using a sgraffito (or scratch-through) technique, then covered in pure gold foil, with additional transparent enamel on top. It is set beneath a pierced disk of darkened sterling silver. The sterling elements cut from the top disk were soldered to the brooch back.
The small upper disk was first covered with a layer of white enamel, which was fired, then covered in black enamel. I scratched through part of this black layer before it was fired. Then areas of color were painted on in thin layers using the Limoges technique.
Note: This brooch is substantial and is not suitable for pinning to light fabrics.
