Brown Astrolabe Necklace
A handcrafted enamel and copper necklace that is based on the design of the astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument. It hangs from a 16 inch rubber cord which can be extended to 17 inches.
An astrolabe can calculate astronomical positions, identify stars or planets, and determine the time if the latitude is known, or vice versa. It can locate us in space and time.
The enamel disk of this necklace was made by coating a copper disk with liquid enamel, letting it dry, then scratching the design through to the bare copper. After the first firing, I drew on it with graphite pencil, which I fired into the enamel. The setting is handmade of copper with patina.
The copper setting of this necklace is colored using a special patina process and then the color is sealed with lacquer and wax. While the coating is quite durable, it can be abraded or scratched. This necklace should not be left in very hot temperatures or submerged in hot water or lacquer thinner. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
