Omega Nebula Necklace
A one-of-a-kind enamel necklace, inspired by a famous Hubble photo of part of the Omega Nebula, also known as M17, a massive star-forming region in the constellation Sagittarius. In the photo, ultraviolet light from massive young stars warms the surfaces of cold hydrogen gas, making it glow red and orange and creating a veil of glowing greenish gas. The enamel painting is on a copper base set in a handmade sterling setting.
My nebula was made by painting many thin layers of metal oxide powders mixed with acrylic media on an enamel base. As each of these layers was fired in a kiln, the oxides sank into the underlying glass and the picture was slowly built up. I put on a final layer of clear enamel and fired it until the grains were just beginning to fuse together, giving the enamel a matt, instead of shiny surface. This is known as a sugar-fire.
The pendant is on a sterling silver commercial foxtail chain that is 18 inches long, but with an additional section of link chain that makes the necklace extend anywhere from 18 to 21 ½ inches in length.
